Mysterious Gourd Garden, the Journey Begins!

If you knew me you'd know there are a few things I love.  I love my family, the beach, to paint, to play drums, ride bikes and horses, to teach and to work in my garden.  I'm a jack of all trades and things are always fluid and changing.

Last fall a crazy thing happened.  Where two large trees fell behind my garage a decorative gourd vine sprang up.  It flowed like a river down my driveway strung with about 50 decorative gourds. I brought them to my classroom and gave them to friends. I was stunned by the beauty and elegance of the vine.

I did some research and bought some seeds.  Monster wood gourd seeds for four foot African wooden drum gourds, Indonesian bottleneck gourds, round bushel gourds and those bulbous bottle gourds people like to make birdhouses out of.  I planted all these seeds on a window ledge in my living room, inside empty seltzer bottles.  That was right after St, Patricks day and now, at the start of July, I have a ton of gourds growing in various gardens around my property!

These nocturnal beauties have me completely captivated.  Follow along to see how this first year growing gourds goes by clicking on the videos below. We will see if they survive the frost and hardy up into watertight wood containers I can carve and paint and turn into drums, bowls, vases, finger pianos, whatever I can dream of.  I can't wait to see what comes out of all this. -Laura

Update April They grew! I harvested 30 gorgeous gourds and am currently turning them into objects de' art. I am fascinated and in love with these beautiful plants. I have given some away and sold a few. I am going to sell 20 in total this season for about $35 each in hopes of making back my initial investment. Wish me luck and stay tuned -Laura
